Art in a Nursing Home?

I work at a nursing home.  It’s not the most glamorous job in the world, but someone has to do it. I was on our dementia unit yesterday and one of the ladies who resides there, her daughter brought in some arts and crafts. So, me and another nurse aide painted little tote bags and made jewelry with them during some of our down time at work. It is amazing that people who can barely form sentences, can’t remember their kids, and don’t know where there rooms are can sit down without a problem and make art.

It may not seem like something that is that great of a significance to someone who doesn’t realize what it’s like in a nursing home, but for someone with dementia to sit down for an extended period of time and create something is amazing… It just shows that art can be used as a therapeutic tool. It may not seem like art to some people, but the smiles on there faces when they were showing off their things that they had made was a work of art itself.
