Greetings! This blog is the collective work of students enrolled in Art History on the south campus of Southern State Community College. Each week we will be adding new entries and ideas. We encourage you to comment and add your own voice.
Two ideas motivate the development of this blog. One, we want to share what we are learning with others interested in art and history. Two, we want share and extend our conversations and ideas beyond the classroom and beyond a requirement for credit.
We welcome your comments and hope you enjoy this blog.

Hi,
I am a middle school English/History teacher in Los Angeles. I started a new blog using wordpress for my students yesterday. I’ve experimented with many other platforms. I love how you have used Categories to distinguish students. If you have time, can you give me feedback on how this is working and if you have run into any confusions (obviously my middle schoolers will have more than your college students!) re: using tags and categories, permalinks, trackbacks, etc.?
Thanks for the inspiration.
Best,
Robert C. Barker
Hi Robert –
I’m thrilled to hear you started a blog for your students. Can you share the url? I’d love to read it.
I’ve no problems here with categories, tags, etc. and I’ll tell you why – I post all entries. Student send me their writing and images via email and I cut and paste them into our wordpress blog. I also do the same for students in my public speaking classes ( http://ssccspeakers.wordpress.com ).
Robert,
I wanted to post a follow up to your question about students posting their blog entries, tags, categories. This summer quarter, I offered (for the first time) the opportunity for students in my public speaking class to post their own blog entries. Out of 20 students in my class, 12 gladly volunteered to give it a try. I made each of them authors, rather than contributors. Wasn’t sure at first if this was a good idea at first but it worked out well. All 12 quickly learned how to navigate wordpress well enough to successfully post their entries. After they posted, I went in and added categories, etc. Go to http://ssccspeakers.wordpress.com to take a look.
From now on, I’ll invite students to enter their own posts. I might add a ‘how-to’ video on voicethread for added support to learners. Good luck!
